Estylo: So what amazing things have occurred since we last met?
Laura: A lot. I shot The Punisher, my biggest Hollywood movie, and a beautiful European film, The Poet. That was the first one I made in Europe; we shot half in Austria, half in Germany. It’s such a romantic film. I’ve been traveling a lot. I went to Europe eight times in the last year.

Estylo: What is the difference between the crews there and here?
Laura: The passion. They are such film-lovers over there. They work really hard and they want to be proud of the film. It was such a great experience! When you do a difficult or special scene, the crew applauds. They are passionate about film and life in general. They work so hard. And they like to celebrate. Every week, one of the department heads would throw a party.

Estylo: So what did Mulholland Drive do for your career?
Laura: David [Lynch] opened up a lot of doors for me, and they keep opening, one after the other. When I booked The Punisher, I didn’t even meet Travolta; he saw Mulholland Drive and approved me. This is amazing, because a lot of stars you have to meet first [in order to be approved]. Everyone on this picture was so nice. The actors, the producers...it was like a big family. And John — J.T., as he’s called — treated me as an equal. He gave me such respect. I just couldn’t believe how supportive, kind and creative he is. His agent said that we should do a romantic comedy together.

Estylo: So in summation, your philosophy is…?
Laura: Trusting that things happen when they’re meant to. When you’re in the right state of mind, you attract like a magnet. At the time I booked Mulholland Drive, I didn’t have an agent. My manager was a music manager, so he wasn’t sending me out. It was like I was not represented. The role came to me through the casting lady! At that time I was in such a blissful state of mind. This can be achieved by being very present, not trapped in the head or in the future, and applying the power of now. Most of us are caught in the future. We think we will be happy “if.” That’s not what happens. Happiness happens in the here, in the now.

Estylo: I can see the change in your face.
Laura: I’m lighter. My spirit is lighter. I’m also not wearing all that makeup. [ironic laughter] That was very deep. [more laughter] It’s like when people say, “You look great” and you respond, “I washed my hair.” Sometimes it’s that simple!

Estylo: I wish. How did you turn that corner?
Laura: I think I just turned it a few months ago, really. I’ve been working on getting rid of anxiety and all that worry and fear. I think now that self-sufficiency is happiness.

Estylo: So you just turned forty, right?
Laura: That’s what they say. [laughter]

Estylo: Okay. Well, you look amazing. What are you using on your skin?
Laura: A French line called Yon Ka, made with essential oils. It changed my skin.

Estylo: What about designers? Do you have any favorites?
Laura: I recently discovered the vintage couture of the French designer Louis Feraud. I love the details, and they are made for curvy bodies. I can’t wear Richard Tyler — it’s made for skinny women.

Estylo: What about dressing for the red carpet? Any dos and don’ts? You always look great…but what was the deal with those million-dollar sandals? (Laura wore million-dollar, diamond-studded Stuart Weitzman sandals to the 2002 Oscars.)
Laura: [laughing] The people critiquing fashion, like Melissa and Joan [Rivers], are very conservative. It’s got to be matchy-matchy. The shoes, the bag. The European style that I learned was that you don’t match the shoes to the dress. But it doesn’t go over well here. And because I don’t want to be criticized, I’ll wear matching accessories. So that’s a bit of a sell-out. [laughter] I love quirky style, but you’ll inevitably be on the worst dressed list!

Estylo: And diet?
Laura: I am very blessed to have the Zone Nation diet delivered to my door. You get three meals a day, two snacks, and it’s delicious. It satisfies, you have protein, and you still lose weight. I have to be careful — I gain easily and I have this J-Lo butt.

Estylo: No, you don’t.
Laura: [laughing] Really? Oh, good. But I admire her for showing it in Vanity Fair, with her back to the camera. She liberated a lot of Latinas.

Estylo: Any acting secrets that you’ve learned along the way?
Laura: Good things come when you relax into who you are. The trick is to be so relaxed and connected that it’s no longer you doing the work. That’s what I’m trying to incorporate into my work, to have peace in my heart, to attract the right things to me. I started writing, and I love it. I had an article published last November in Jane Magazine. They wanted to know about the time when I was shot in the head.

Estylo: When did that happen?
Laura: When I was twelve. It was a drive-by, and I caught a stray bullet in the head. I was in the hospital for 24 hours. They did X-rays. The bullet did not actually enter my skull. It missed my brain by a millimeter.

Estylo: Hmm. Must have been your guardian angel.
Laura: [smiling] Yes. I’m very blessed.

Estylo: ¿Qué cosas extraordinarias te han ocurrido desde la última vez que nos encontramos?
Laura: Mucho. Actué en The Punisher, la película más grande de Hollywood en la que participé, y una hermosa película europea, The Poet (El Poeta). Esa fue la primera que hice en Europa; filmamos la mitad en Austria y la otra mitad en Alemania. Es una película tan romántica. He estado viajando mucho. Fui a Europa ocho veces el año pasado.

Estylo: ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre el equipo del estudio de allá y el de aquí?
Laura: La pasión. Allá aman al cine tanto. Trabajan realmente mucho y quieren sentirse orgullosos de la película. ¡Fue una experiencia tan magnífica! Cuando haces una escena difícil o especial, el equipo aplaude. Tienen pasión por la película y por la vida en general. Trabajan tanto. Y les gusta celebrar. Todas las semanas, uno de los jefes de departamento preparaba una fiesta.

Estylo: ¿En qué te ayudó Mulholland Drive a tu carrera?
Laura: David (Lynch) me abrió muchas puertas y se siguen abriendo. Cuando me contrataron para The Punisher, ni siquiera lo había conocido a Travolta; él vio Mulholland Drive y me aprobó. Es magnífico, porque a muchas estrellas las tienes que conocer primero (para ser aprobada). Todos en esta película han sido tan buenos. Los actores, productores…era como una gran familia. Y John — J.T., como lo llaman — me trató como a un par. Fue tan respetuoso, no podía creer que me apoyara tanto y cuán amable y creativo es. Su representante dijo que deberíamos hacer una comedia romántica juntos.

Estylo: Así que, en síntesis, ¿tu filosofía es…?
Laura: Confiar en que las cosas sucedan cuando tienen que suceder. Cuando estás en el estado mental correcto, uno atrae como un imán. En el momento que me contrataron para Mulholland Drive, no tenía un representante. Tenía un representante de música, así que él no conseguía trabajos. Era como si no hubiera sido representada. ¡El papel me llegó a través de la encargada del elenco! En ese momento, estaba en un estado mental de tanta felicidad. Esto puede conseguirse estando muy presente, no entrampada en la cabeza o en el futuro y aplicando el poder del ahora. La mayoría de nosotros estamos atrapados en el futuro. Creemos que seremos felices “si”. Eso no es lo que sucede. La felicidad sucede en el presente, ahora.

Estylo: Puedo ver el cambio en tu rostro.
Laura: Estoy más relajada. Mi espíritu está más relajado. Y no llevo tanto maquillaje. (risa irónica). Eso fue muy profundo. (más risas) Es como cuando la gente dice, “Luces fabulosa” y uno responde, “Me lavé el pelo”. ¡A veces es así de simple!

Estylo: Espero. ¿Cómo se produjo ese cambio?
Laura: Creo que sucedió hace unos meses. He estado tratando de eliminar la ansiedad y todas las preocupaciones y miedos. Ahora pienso que la auto-suficiencia es la felicidad.

Estylo: Así que, acabas de cumplir cuarenta años, ¿no?
Laura: Eso es lo que dicen. (se ríe)

Estylo: Muy bien. Bueno, luces magnífica. ¿Qué estás usando en tu piel?
Laura: Una línea francesa llamada Yon Ka, hecha de aceites esenciales. Me cambió la piel.

Estylo: ¿Y los diseñadores? ¿Prefieres a algunos en especial?

Laura: [riéndose] La gente que critica la moda, tales como Melissa y Joan [Rivers] son muy conservadoras. Todo debe complementarse demasiado. Los zapatos, el bolso. Estylo: ¿Y sobre dietas?
Laura: Tengo la bendición de que me lleven la dieta “Zone Nation” a mi casa. Recibes tres comidas, dos meriendas y son deliciosas. Te satisfacen, tienen proteínas y aún así pierdes peso. Tengo que tener cuidado — subo de peso fácilmente y tengo un trasero similar a J-Lo.

Estylo: No, no lo tienes.
Laura: (riéndose) ¿Es verdad? Oh, qué bien. Pero la admiro por mostrarlo en Vanity Fair, dando la espalda a la cámara. Ella liberó a muchas latinas.

Estylo: ¿Algún secreto sobre las actuaciones que hayas aprendido en el camino?
Laura: Las buenas cosas ocurren cuando te relajas y eres tú misma. El truco es estar tan relajada y conectada que ya no eres tú la que haces el trabajo. Eso es lo que estoy tratando de incorporar a mi trabajo, tener la paz en mi corazón, para atraer lo que es apropiado para mí. Empecé a escribir y me encanta. Me publicaron un artículo en Jane Magazine en noviembre del año pasado. Querían saber sobre la ocasión en que me dispararon un tiro en la cabeza.

Estylo: ¿Cuándo sucedió eso?
Laura: Cuando tenía doce años de edad. Ocurrió cuando pasaba en el auto por una ventanilla para comprar comida y una bala fue directamente a mi cabeza. Estuve en el hospital por 24 horas. Me sacaron radiografías. La bala no llegó a entrar al cráneo. No entró en el cerebro por un milímetro.

Estylo: Debe haber sido tu ángel de la guarda.
Laura: [sonriendo] Sí, me siento muy bendecida.
